The author's comments are well taken. Many of the physicians I work with need help in understanding the importance of taking a proactive stance regarding information security. Many physicians want to be proactive, do the right thing and protect patient information. However, because they are physicians and not computer scientists, they are at the mercy of their IT contractors. The one or two physician practices I usually see cannot afford to consult with an IBM or HP, so they frequently contract IT services from small local IT contractors. I don't have an answer to the author's issues. I do agree that, as an industry, health care is behind the curve on information security and there will be some pain as this is addressed.
